Becoming A Member

Unitarian-Universalists inherit a rich, prophetic heritage of freedom of conscience and self-determination.  Because of this, we agree not to impose any particular religious creed on each other. Instead, we covenant together to live out our purposes and principles and to support a congregational mission statement.  If our church sounds like a spiritual home for you, consider becoming a member.

What Our Community Offers

If you are seeking...

  • a welcoming religious community that encourages spiritual growth,
  • a chance to consider religious questions with people from different religious persuasions,
  • a place to study the wisdom of great moral leaders from various times, traditions, and cultures,
  • a church where children and adults develop their own beliefs with guidance and support, but without dogmatic compulsion or limitation,
  • a sanctuary to develop, preserve, and extend the tradition of personal freedom and human dignity,

...this may be the church for you. Welcome!

Membership Commitments

To nurture the health, vitality, and purpose of UUSF, and to encourage thoughtful and meaningful relationships with each other, we ask members to commit to:

General accord with the goals and objectives of our Mission Statement.

Fellowship with the church and its members, through engagement with the church’s community gatherings.  These might include worship, social justicesocial activities, education programs, or other activities.

Financial support of the church and its work, through a gift or pledge.  If you are not able to contribute financially, please ask a minister about a waiver.

Members are entitled to vote in meetings and elections, to seek and hold elected office, and to participate in select and standing committees.  UUSF members are automatically enrolled as members in the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.

How to Join

If you are ready to join UUSF, come to an Invitation to Membership meeting with one of our ministers and a member of our Board of Trustees. Invitation to Membership is held the third Sunday of each month after the morning service. Here, you will have a chance to discuss your journey to UUSF, the relationship that you would like to nurture, and any questions you have.  If you are ready, you may elect to join our membership by signing our membership book.  Signers will be asked to make their financial pledge at this time.

New members are recognized and welcomed by our community at a Sunday service several times each year.  We post names and photos of new members in our church centers, and hold fellowship events to keep new members oriented.

We also recommend that you take our New UUs: Sharing the Journey class before or immediately after joining our membership. This class will take place on three Sunday afternoons and one Saturday evening.  Call the church office at 415-776-4580 or email us for more information or to register for the class.

Questions?

If you have any questions or concerns about membership, call us, email us, fill out one of the yellow cards in your pew, or stop by our greeters’ table outside of Sunday service.  Welcome home!

Non-members at UUSF

Whether you are a member or not, please feel free to participate in our services and to seek help and advice from our ministers.  Most of our community activities are also open to non-members.  We want to be a church that you can count on for your spiritual needs, wherever you are in your religious journey.

UUSF accepts and affirms membership without regard to race, color, sex, disability, affectional or sexual orientation, age, or national origin and without requiring adherence to any particular interpretation of religion or to any particular religious belief or creed.
