What We Have Accomplished

Access Sunday Service and Dance Celebrates UUSF Accessibility Improvements

"A Disabled God" was the topic of the Thanksgiving Service at the
Universalist Society of San Francisco.  The service featured John Alex Lowell from San Francisco's First Congregational Church, Lori Guidos, UUSF Equual Access Chair and The Reverend Jeremiah Kalendae, UUSF Beyond Sunday Ministry.

Following the service a potluck and dance was held to celebrate all the
volunteers within the congregation who helped to make the community more accessible.

Accessibility Improvements at FUUSF

Outstanding progress has been made to make First Unitarian Universalist Center and Church of San Francisco accessible to people of all abilities. Listed below are the accessability features of FUUSF:

»   The church has three entry locations for disabled access:  by an elevator in the underground garage off of Starr King Way;  by a front entrance ramp on the corner of Geary and Franklin Streets;  and by a powered door on Starr King Way near two disabled parking spaces.  An automobile loading area is located at the foot of the ramp on Geary.

»   Within the sanctuary, there is a chancel ramp and four wheelchair seating spaces.

»   Within the Center, there is an upper and lower hallway ramp providing access to meeting rooms and the Chapel.

»   The Chapel is accessible by a powered door and a  ramp within the Chapel.

»   There is disabled parking in two places adjacent to the church, two spaces on Starr King Way and one space on Geary near the Montessori School.  Additional disability parking may be reserved by the church for special events or by the request.

»   Both bathrooms are wheelchair accessible.  A person with a disability will probably not need help;  a wheelchair can get in and out of stalls and there are grab bars.

»   Assistive hearing devices are available at a table in the rear of the sanctuary for use during Sunday services.  The church also has portable devices that can be used in other rooms.

»   Large print Orders of Service are available for Sunday services.  Ask an usher or the volunteer staffing the table in the rear of the sanctuary.

»   The drinking fountain is accessible to people who use wheelchairs.

»   Smoking is not allowed inside the church building and center.

»   A baby changing table is available in both bathrooms.

»   The church has a stair lift for all locations that are up a flight of stairs.
