Our Mission

How to Get Involved
Just show up. See for yourself if meditation / mindfulness practice makes a difference in your life. You can sit and listen to the dharma talk in solitude, or you can meet people and have conversations during the tea break.
The potluck on the first Sunday of the month is also a nice way to meet people, and enjoy some delicious vegetarian food. There are many volunteer opportunities, such as helping with weekly set up or joining committees to help to organize events. You can also join a group that participates in SF’s Project Homeless Connect.
About SF Insight Buddhist Sangha
TRADITION: We practice vipassana (insight) meditation in the Theravada tradition brought here from Southeast Asia, as taught at Spirit Rock and Insight Meditation Society. We are also affiliated with the UU Buddhist Fellowship.
FORMAT: A silent or partially guided meditation for 40-45 minutes, then a tea break, where we continue to practice mindfulness in silence or conversation, then a dharma talk and/or question-and-answer and discussion.
HISTORY: This group started in a home in San Francisco in 1993, moved to the UU chapel in 1997, and finally outgrew that space and moved to the larger Starr King Room. Eugene Cash is the founding teacher, and he offers talks on Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice applicable to our time and place.
FOCUS: Learning to bring our practice into our daily lives, by staying present and mindful at work or play, in family and relationships.
