Transitions
Sunday, May 18 at 11 am in the Church Sanctuary
service presented by Betty Skwarek with Rev.
Greg Stewart
Life is full of transitions and we'll focus
on two that have significance in our
congregation: Rite of Passage for children
in the third grade, and a Bridging Ceremony
(into young adulthood) for youth who are
graduating from high school.
Our younger UUs
will pose questions to the ministers that are
sure to address issues that concern us all.
Our teens will share how being a Unitarian
Universalist and a member of this church has
shaped their lives so far and what they will
take from us to the next chapter of their
lives.
This is the first worship service
designed and presented by our acting director
of religious education, Betty
Skwarek. Our
honorees are Callie Brandeis,
Ashley Coskey,
Tiana Kujawski, Neil Robarge,
Tobias
Sunshine, Caitlin Furney, Grace
Komarek-Meyer, Katya Shackelford,
and Emilia
Theobald.
Joining us on the pulpit will be
Pastoral Care Minister Fred Rabidoux,
Community Minister Alyson Jacks, and
Ministerial Intern Jeremy Nickel. The
choir
and the youth choir minister in music. Note:
this service is for all ages! Childcare is
available for infants through age five. ≈

School of the Americas Watch, a Growing Movement
Forum Sunday at 9:30 in the Martin Luther King Room
from Karen Melander-Magoon and Barbara Allen
This protest movement against the School of
the Americas (SOA) has grown to tens of
thousands from across the country and
throughout Latin America. Over 20,000
attended the vigil and rally at Fort Benning,
Georgia in 2007, including veteran activists
and many new younger participants.
Come and listen to students from Richmond
High School as they relate why they are
involved in this movement. Their witness is
compelling. Former U.S. Army Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Byrne Sherwood, a former
East Bay school teacher and veteran of the
Vietnam
War, will also bear witness.
A short video
precedes the program.
The free program will start at 9:45. Come at
9:30 for conversation, coffee, and (for a
slight charge) a light breakfast.
Youth Bridging Ceremony & Rite of Passage
Religious Education Program Service at 11am in the Sanctuary
from Betty Skwarek, Acting Director of
Religious Education
How do children grow up as Unitarian
Universalists? At Sunday's service,
experience the
wisdom of our children as we celebrate
transitions in their lives and learn about
our church from their eyes. It is a time to
recognize those who have helped them on their
journey and to consider what having children
in our congregation means to each of us.
We will have childcare for children
five and younger but no Sunday school.
Children over five are invited to attend the
entire service in the Sanctuary.
When we
come to church we bring ourselves molded by
the experiences of our lives. This is true
whether we are eight years old or eighty.
Stopping occasionally to celebrate what are
lives have taught us and to anticipate the
next steps on our paths is important. We
recognize the accomplishment of these youth
and our roles as individuals and as a
congregation in shaping these lives, just as
we remember the roles of those who influenced
us in years past. What we do for and with
these children is our gift to them and to the
world that they will inhabit long after we
are gone.
• The
complete
schedule of Religious Education activities is
available
online.
We're hiring a lead teacher for our
preschoolers. Curious? Interested? Contact
Betty Skwarek for a job description and
information on how to apply.
Congregational Meeting to Vote on Annual Budget
Sunday, May 18, in Thomas Starr King room after the service
from Jane Park, Moderator of the Board of
Trustees
Come join us this Sunday for the
congregational meeting to vote on the 2008 - 2009

We will also consider a motion to waive our

auditing firm) recommend a financial review.
The meeting begins shortly after the service
in the Thomas Starr King room. Lunch will be
available, thanks to our All Church Retreat
committee. So grab a hot dog and make your
voice heard at this important meeting.

Stock Donations Tip from Nancy
Generous folk, please take credit when credit is due
from Nancy Evans, Executive Director
We love it when we look in the Donor Stock
Fund and find contributions waiting to be
cashed! However, we receive no notice from
Charles Schwab when these contributions
occur, and no donor name. So even if you
told the Executive Director a month ago at
coffee hour, please leave a message by phone
or e-mail so that we may credit your donation
properly.
Appreciated stock is a great way to make your
financial contribution to FUUSF. If you would
like more information, please call Nancy
Evans or bookkeeper Grace Lam.
Seder Celebration - A UU Tradition
Join us for Passover Seder, Friday, May 16 at 6:30pm
from Maria Solis
There's still time to RSVP for our Unitarian
Universalist celebration of Passover Seder on
Friday, May 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the church.
We remember those who still fight for
freedom, a constant struggle ever since
that first recorded event; the Exodus, in
biblical times.
Bring your favorite dish to our potluck
dinner, which starts with delicious
vegetarian matzoh ball soup, and ends with
dessert of noodle krugel. Enjoy an evening
of good food, singing and inspirational
readings in the company of friends. Call
Maria Solis at 415-221-2575 to RSVP.
Do a Green Clean of your Medicine Cabinet!
Bring your outdated and unused medications to the June 1st Water Fair
from Linda Harris
Is your medicine cabinet full of outdated and
unused medications with no safe disposal
system available? Roughly 35% of such
pharmaceuticals get flushed down the toilet
from which they move on to contaminate over
80% of the waterways in the US. Such
contamination is considered by the EPA to be
one of the most significant emerging
environmental threats of the 21st century.
Organizers of the UUSC Water Fair on June
1st, noon to 3pm at church,
have teamed up with Teleosis Institute to
offer a turn-in booth for such medications.
View the UUSC
Water
Fair flyer.
You can find a list of medications which can
be accepted by Teleosis and a link to their
medication return forms at Teleosis
Pharmaceutical Disposal Program.
Representatives from Recycled Aids
Medicine Program will also be on hand to
accept unused HIV medications for
distribution to organizations overseas.
For additional information regarding this or
other water crisis programming being offered
at the Water Fair, please contact Linda
Harris at 415-215-7292.
