Shall We Be Instruments of Peace?
Sunday, June 15 at 11 am in the Church Sanctuary
service conducted by Rev. Alyson Jacks
"I am going in search of a great perhaps."
writes Francois Rabelais. This Father's Day
we turn our attention to peace and consider
its place in the great perhaps.
Rev. Jacks will be joined by Worship
Associate Alison Rittger and
professional story teller Sandra Niman
who will share a folk tale entitled, "The
Tiger's Whisker".
The voices of the Threshold Choir, led by
Kate Munger, will grace our sanctuary. We
will also enjoy the beautiful and talented
voices of our church choir. This will be the
the final Sunday before they take a summer
hiatus. We will hear songs of peace, sing
songs of peace, and learn two new beautiful
rounds.
Tibetan Vajrayana Master Chögyam Trungpa
Rinpoche said, "Live your life as an
experiment." Sunday we will experiment with
music, story, and the practice of peace. Join us!

Congregation Celebrates Legal Marriage for All
Sign Up at Coffee Hour Sunday for Your Time at City Hall on June 17th
from Rev. Gregory Stewart
Don Williams and David Jones
met in 1978. This photo shows them that year
in San Francisco. Now, 30 years later, they
will legally marry.
Don and David have a 1 pm appointment to get
their marriage license on Tuesday. When they
come out of the clerk's office, Rev. Gregory
Stewart will marry them at City Hall in a
public ceremony in front of their friends.
You're invited.
Come to City Hall, Tuesday (June 17), the
first day that marriage licenses will be
given to all couples who wish to marry. Help
us deliver wedding gifts to those who wait in
line at City Hall on this historic day.
Come and let folk from all over the country
know that Unitarian Universalists celebrate
love without judgment and faith without limits.
Clergy will be in clerical robes and lay
members of the community will be robed in
t-shirts designed by Stefan Salinas
proclaiming the Unitarian Universalist
support of equal rights. We'll have
musicians and
ministers on hand for both the ceremonies and
photos. Our community will be at City Hall
to cheer couples starting at 8 am that first
day.
Let Don or David know when on Tuesday you can
come to City Hall. They will be at a table
at coffee hour after the Sunday service
signing up volunteers, offering equality
t-shirts, and
coordinating gifts. Talk with them on
Sunday for
the latest plans, times, and celebration
information!
In lieu of wedding gifts, Don and David ask
that their marriage by honored by a donation
to the First Unitarian Universalist Society
of San Francisco's
marriage equality ministry.
Wedding (CUP)cakes For All the Brides and Grooms
Bring Your Gifts to Church by 7 pm Monday -- THINK CUPCAKES!
from Lucy Smith
Help us make as many cupcakes as we can so
every couple can have their own wedding cake.
If you want to join the effort, bring your
cupcakes -- however many you want, whatever
flavor you want, homemade or store-bought -- to
the church. Drop them off Sunday or anytime
until 7 pm Monday. Please put them in a box
(shoe box, shirt box, whatever you've got)
so we can stack them without
smushing any cupcakes.
Food has a part in nearly all rituals and
weddings are certainly no exception. Tuesday
will be an historic occasion and this is a
way to be there in spirit even if you can't
be there in body. Be a part of
history! Think cupcakes!
Please let Lucy Smith know if you plan to
bake/bring and approximately how many so we
can plan accordingly. Contact her by phone:
510.528-8540 or by e-mail.

The clip was filmed this week and is up on
YouTube

Poetry and Moolaadé in a Foolish Night
Saturday (June 14) starting at 4 pm at 234 Hyde Street
from Sr. Carmen Barsody
The Faithful Fools welcome you to a free
poetry reading
and film night this Saturday (June 14) at
Fools Court, 234 Hyde Street.
Open-mic poetry is from 4 to 6, and the film
begins at 7 pm.
This month's film is Moolaadé
by the great Senegalese novelist and
filmmaker Ousmane Sembene.
The film follows a group of girls who resist
their village community's ritual of female
circumcision with the help of a Protection
(Moolaadé) invoked by their mother.
The subject may sound heavy, but Sembene
heads off any hint of exploitation of
audience tears or guilt, aiming instead for
uplift. Moolaadé uses irony
and visual absurdity to poke holes in
hypocrisy and orthodoxy — the Fool's
role.
Come Saturday and be Foolish yourself. Just
show up at 4 or 7, or call the Fools at
474-0508 for more information.
