The Church and Center

Faith of the Larger Liberty:
Do Unitarian Universalists need
Liberty for their Faith?
Sunday, July 6 at 11 am in the Church Sanctuary
service conducted by The Rev. Fred Rabidoux
This Sunday we'll explore the role that
liberty plays in providing for civil religion
and religious freedom, and whether the
history of the past eight years matters to
the future of Liberal Religion.
Worship Associate Ben Bear will join
Rev. Rabidoux on the chancel. Christine
Duncan will be the guest soprano.
Summer Arts Project Begins
Leave Church at 10 Sunday for the Faithful Fools
from Betty Skwarek
Acting Director of Religious Education
The Summer Arts project is creating art from
now until August 24!
Our artists have planned some fabulous
experiences and the Fools Court is ready to
greet all who come.
Participants will learn new artistic
techniques, exercise their creativity,
learn more about the Tenderloin and the
people who live there, and meet new people
young and old. You may choose which Sundays
you want to attend, but pre-registration is
important because we want to save you a
place. Everyone age 6 or older is welcome to
attend.
Brochures are available at several locations
in the church, in the newsletter, on the RE
Google group, and can also be accessed
online.
Childcare for ages 0 to 5 is available from
9:45 until 12:15 Sunday and throughout the
summer. Older children who are not
participating in Summer Arts are invited to
attend the 11 am Sanctuary worship service.
The ushers have mandala pictures for those
who want to keep their hands busy. The
Religious Education Library and playground
will be open for children to
use from 10 until 12:30 with adult
supervision.
Post Office Refuses to Deliver the Newsletter
The United States Postal Service refused to
accept the July-August edition of the
Unitarian Universalist for bulk
mailing last week. The postal officials
noticed that the name on the newsletter was
"Unitarian Universalist" while the mailing
permit was issued to just the "Unitarian"
Society.
The discrepancy had not previously troubled
Postal Service officials for the decade(s)
since the Society added "Universalist" to its
legal name. However, it bothered them last week.
Executive Director Nancy Evans
and the Postal officials have negotiated the
delivery of the mail, but the newsletter will
be late.
However, you can read the newsletter NOW...
online.
This month -- and every month -- a color
edition of the Unitarian Universalist
is available as a pdf download.
Good and Welfare
Congratulations to Senior Minister, The
Reverend Gregory Stewart, on his election
last week to the the Unitarian Universalist
Association of Congregations' Ministerial
Fellowship Committee (MFC). The MFC is the
credentialing body of our movement. Rev.
Stewart's election is quite an
honor!
The July issue of the Potrero View
neighborhood newspaper has a nice article
about Natalie Freeburg, Brian
Ferguson, and family, including a photo.
The newspaper is widely available around the
neighborhood. The July issue
is not yet posted at the
newspaper's website, but we'll keep
checking back to see the family
online.
Ben won! The Boston Red Sox have announced that
our own Ben B was elected a 2008 Red
Sox Kid Nation Captain. Congratulations, Ben!

Congratulations to Carol and Theresa!
Ann Arbor
Unitarian Universalists Theresa
Bassett and Carol Kennedy came to San
Francisco last Friday to get married.
They
and their six children drove across the
country on a summer vacation jaunt,
highlighted by a legal California wedding in
our chapel.
Our
San Francisco Society was delighted with
the opportunity to honor their relationship.
Jeremy Nickel performed the ceremony
which included a prayer that the couple first
heard in a service of union 18 years ago.
Mark
Rogers Photography donated their
professional services for wedding pictures,
and Jay Roller
provided a wedding cake which was a special
hit with the younger children.
Congratulations and best wishes to Carol,
Theresa, and their entire family.

Can You Offer Home Hospitality?
from Executive Director Nancy Evans
Do you have a spare bedroom you would like to
offer to out-of-town visiting Unitarian
Universalists?
Every few weeks, we get requests from folks
who are accompanying hospitalized relatives
or attending special conventions (a music
archivist in August) or riding bicycles
across the country. These guests are willing
to make a reasonable financial contribution,
but can't handle hotel prices.
Please email
the office with details of your space. We
will refer inquiries to you.
