Hometown Prophet
Sunday, August 17 at 11 am in the Church Sanctuary
service conducted by Rev. Dr. Gordon Gibson
In this campaign season we have seen the
presumptive presidential candidates of both
major parties backing away from the pulpit
pronouncements of clergy supporters.
Is this just because sometimes preachers say
crazy things, or is it at least partly
because people get uncomfortable when someone
speaks prophetically?
Jesus is reported to have said, "No prophet
is accepted in the prophet's hometown."
Did Jesus know what he was talking about?
— Rev. Gordon
Gibson

He will be playing standards from the early
1920's up to present day.
A light lunch will be served. Grilled chicken
salad for $5! Come and enjoy yourself.

Books by and about Ric Masten
from Rev. Dr. Gordon Gibson
Rev. Gordon Gibson used a variety of sources for
last Sunday's service, which was built around
the life and the poetry of Ric Masten. The
poems "With Birth to Look Forward To,"
"Dementia," and "Me and Pancho Villa" were
taken from Going
Out Dancing by Ric
Masten (Skinner House, 2008) and words at the
head of the order of service were taken from
"Endline" in that collection.
'"Poor Devil"' and "Sing a Song," as well as
some of the autobiographical and biographical
material Gordon used, appear in Troubadour
and Poet: the Magical Ministry of Ric
Masten by Stephen D. Edington with Ric
Masten, Foreword by Ruby Dee (Trafford
Publishing, 2007).
"Learning Disabled" is in Ric Masten's
collection of poems and one line drawings, Let
it Be a Dance (Carmel Publishing Company,
2001).
Rev. Gibson also incorporated in "Me and
Pancho Villa" a slight variation as printed
in Not Dead Yet: Take 3 - Words &
One-Liners by Ric Masten (Sun-Ink
Presentations, 37931 Palo Colorado Road,
Carmel, CA 93923, 2008).
