Congregation Stands on the Side of Love
This liberal religious community has celebrated,
prayed, and shouted out its affirmation of
the right for all loving couples to be
treated equally by the state.
Last Sunday we witnessed the marriage of
Senior Minister Rev. Gregory Stewart and
Stillman Stewart. We toasted them
and other members of our community who were
married this summer. The picture below shows
some of the Society's newlyweds in front of the
cupcake wedding cake created by Richard
Davis and provisioned by quartermaster
Lucy
Smith and volunteer bakers in the
Congregation.
Monday night we gathered for a wedding
vigil which announced our opposition to
Proposition 8. That service marked the
opening of the church doors for 24 hours during
which our clergy married all comers. Young
adults in our community lead the vigil
service and buoyed our spirits with a reception
and a screening of Inlaws & Outlaws.
We have been a beacon of liberal faith.
Television news broadcasts from at least 5
stations showed the Stewart's wedding and our
vigil. They interviewed us and helped spread
our life-affirming message.
Proposition 8 won. We still have our faith
and community.

others. If you have a particular interest
please talk to Betty at 776-4580.

The Passion of Joan of Arc
Monday at 8:30 pm in the Sanctuary
from Carrie Steere-Salazar
On Monday evening (November 10) the adult
choir will join Music Director Dr. Mark
Sumner's other choral groups from UC Berkeley
for an open rehearsal of The Passion of
Joan of Arc, a 1928 silent movie with
sung oratorio accompaniment composed by
Richard Einhorn.
The Passion of Joan of Arc is hailed
as one of the greatest films of all time.
With its extreme close-ups and camera angles,
and with an editing rhythm that breaks nearly
every rule of the craft, this movie makes
virtually every movie critic and scholar's
short list of masterpieces.
The movie will be re-shown on Monday,
November 17, where the choral group will
perform the Einhorn music once again while
the movie is shown at the historic Castro
Theater.
Donations will be accepted at the door for
Monday's rehearsal.
