The Church and Center will be completely closed on Monday (January 19) in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

Fuzzy Logic for Fuzzy Answers
Sunday at 11 in the Church Sanctuary
logic service conducted by Peter Olandt
Ministerial Intern

There is a common complaint that Unitarian Universalism does not always provide answers. "Fuzzy Logic for Fuzzy Answers" looks at the answers Unitarian Universalism does provide, and will give clues to many more. The service will be the second part of a two-part series on education.

The effectiveness of our educational models directly impacts our abilities to reach these answers. While not Unitarian Universalists themselves, both Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Elect Barack Obama are role models for our progressive religion.

Joining Ministerial Intern Peter Olandt on the Chancel will be Worship Associate Otto O'Connor, Guest Associate Dara Kaufman-LeDonne, and acolyte Tobias Johnson.

Come celebrate a glorious day with us!

A Gum Tree Girl's Inside Story
Tuesday (January 20) Social Hour Luncheon Starts at 11:30
Traffic Jam on San Francisco freeway from Don Williams

The Society for Community Work (SCW) will host San Francisco community organizer Zoanne Nordstrom on Inauguration Day of former community organizer, Barack Obama.

Zoanne is one of the original "Gum Tree Girls." She will tell the inside story of how California's freeway revolt halted the unchallenged plan to run a freeway under Twin Peaks, across Golden Gate Park, all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco City officials ridiculed Zoanne and three other women from her Glen Park neighborhood as a "Gum Tree Girls" when the community organizers physically blocked tree felling equipment advancing through the park. The "Gum Tree Girls" organized, changed history, and awakened Californian's personal power to halt seemingly inevitable "progress."

All members and friends are invited to the SCW Tuesday events. Sign-ups for the catered lunch on Sunday, at the SCW table in the Starr King Room or call Cathy Lyon at 334-7484.

Good and Welfare
Charlie Sava pool

Congratulations to architect Paulett Taggart for the praises given to her design of the new Charlie Sava Pool in the Sunset District (pictured at right).

"... the pool is the reason for the complex, and here's where architecture becomes art: the architects made the water flush with the surrounding floor and set everything high enough that at water level, Wawona Street and its parked cars disappear," wrote San Francisco Chronicle critic John King.

Rev. Jacks Tells All
Register this Week for the Share the Journey Class Series
Rev. Alyson Jacks from Liz Strand

Rev. Alyson Jacks (pictured at left) will talk about Unitarian Universalism and this congregation's history of religious liberalism in a free discussion series which will meet Sundays January 25 and February 1 and 8 from 12:30 to 3.

Geared toward visitors, new members, potential members, and newer existing members, the course will help participants understand more about how they fit in with our community and its traditions.

Rev. Jacks requests that you register as soon as possible and send her the questions you have. While last-minute registrations are always welcomed, she prefers advanced notice so she can answer your questions and structure the class around your interests. Just fill out the registration form and return it to the church office.

A light lunch will be served at each class. There are no requirements to participate and there is no obligation!

Rev. Alyson Jacks is a community minister affiliated with our congregation. For details on her work in San Francisco see A Home Away from Homelessness.

Wake Up and Smell the Coffee!
Cook Breakfast or Dinner at the Church for the Men's Shelter During February
Making breakfast for 80 from Joan S. Rost

Come to church at 5 am and get your first cup of coffee with 80 homeless men. The coffee will be made your way... because you're the cook!

Or, if 5 am is more like your going-to-bed time, join a dinner team to rustle-up the evening meal.

You're needed to pitch in to help serve meals at the February shelter -- you need no special skills or experience. The menu, cooking, serving, and clean-up steps will all be ready for you when you walk in the door.

Sign up to help cook for the winter shelter for one day -- any day of the week in February -- or multiple days. Come to the table after services and talk with Melissa Fafarman, Leslie Bader, or Joan. Or, e-mail Joan for more information or to sign up.

Last week Worship Associate Alison Rittger spoke to the Congregation about questions. The ones she asks her partner, the ones her partner asks, and the questions that don't get asked at all.
