Deadly Sins for Lively Liberals: Lust
Sunday at 11 in the Church Sanctuary
Rev. Alyson Jacks service conducted by The Rev. Gregory L. Stewart

I think that the "sin" of lust often gets a bad rap. After all, what's a little lust among friends? But whereas a bit of lust for the one I love can fuel desire and enhance intimacy, a big lust for everyone in sight can cripple my ability to be in right relation with any one. Moreover, those who lust are often more interested in control that sex. More of the latter yields more of the former, creating an insatiable cycle that is guaranteed to keep love at bay. Lust's antidotes can help those of us who are looking for love in all the wrong places. Come and expect a frank talk about an adult topic that's sure to challenge theologically your assumptions about another "L" word.

Joining me on the Chancel are ministerial intern Peter Olandt, worship associate Alyson Rittger, acolyte Dionte Stewart, and Mary Jane Mikuriya, who will present the 2009 Rheiner Award to a member of our congregation. Our choir ministers in music. Make this Sunday special: invite a friend to church.

School On Sunday, April 26 we are launching the SFUU Can-Do Clean-up Crew. We´ll be going out into the community with trash bags and picking up the papers and other junk that we find along the way. We meet at 10:00 in the chapel to finish up our discussion of what children did with the dollars they received about a month ago - reports are that some of them found some pretty interesting projects to support. At 11:00 the K-2 OWL group and Coming of Age will go to their classes and the rest of us will head out on our quest to make San Francisco a little more beautiful. Adult support is welcome if you decide you´d like to join the group. All participants need to have heavy garden gloves and anyone under 18 must have a permission slip signed by a parent.

"To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity."
-- S. Marcheskin

The Rheiner Award Panel Discussion is named for Rev. Conard Rheiner. The honor acknowledges a member of the Society whose life has shown commitment, leadership, significant accomplishments, and meaningful involvement with our Unitarian Universalist principles.

from Robert D. Bacon

Conard Rheiner (1902-87) was ordained to the Universalist ministry as a young man. After a few years in the parish ministry, he devoted the rest of his career to social service organizations. He was one of the developers of the Mission Neighborhood Centers. He was a charter member of the UU Church of San Mateo and was active in our congregation from 1961 until his death. For more about Conard Rheiner, read the tribute which our minister emeritus, Harry Scholefield, wrote shortly after Mr. Rheiner's death.

The free program will start at 9:45. Come at 9:30 for conversation, coffee, and (for a slight charge) a light breakfast.

How Has the Church Inspired You?
From: Matt Fuller, Vice-Moderator, Board of Trustees

As part of its leadership development initiative, the Board of Trustees has been leading congregational conversations about what the church is doing right in inspiring our members. We've held numerous events over the past several months, and we would like to hear from even more of you!

If you have not had a chance to participate in one of these events, we've made it very easy to give us your input online.

We have a short 10 question survey that will help us collect your input. It should only take you a few minutes to complete the questions, and your input will help shape the future direction of our society.

Thanks!

Tragedy in the Military
Thank you for "The Dark Side of Recruiting," detailing the suicides of U.S. Army recruiters [April 13]. Is it the best training for men and women who choose a military career to feel, as one of your subjects says, "basically forced to do things outside of what would normally be considered to be moral or ethical"? Another probable cause of the suicides may be recruiters feel overwhelming guilt for being part of a system that sends recruits into a horrible, senseless war that they themselves experienced. I hope your story helps make some changes in this system.
-- Dolores Perez Priem, San FRANCISCO

ARE YOU ARRESTABLE?

Here's an update from your activist minister. We know that the California State Supreme Court will rule very soon on the status of Proposition 8, which removes civil rights previously granted to same-sex couples who wish to be married. We know the decision could come any day, but will most likely take place on a Monday or a Thursday. We know there may be a need to protest in light of the court's ruling if they fail us. If you a ready to commit civil disobedience and risk possible arrest if Prop 8 is upheld, please contact me directly to learn how you can participate. Then let's hope and pray we're not needed for protest, but for celebration. --Greg

April Worship in the Park Continues
Saturday at 4 pm in Dolores Park
Dolores Park meeting spot from Peter Olandt, Ministerial Intern

Worshiping out in a beautiful park amongst our greater community can speak to our spirits in a different way than any indoor sanctuary. Come join intern Peter Olandt and others every Saturday in April in Dolores Park.

The community will gather for a picnic (bring your own) around 3 and begin worship at 4. You're invited to come find us at the corner of Dolores and 20th and join in.

If you would like to read, lead a song, play an instrument, light the chalice, or any other aspect, please contact Peter at 776-4580 or by email.

Peter highly recommends the use of public transportation as parking can be difficult. The J MUNI line rolls right next to the park, and the 16th and Mission BART station is a short walk away.
