Finding Your Path
Sunday at 11 in the Church Sanctuary
service conducted by Peter Olandt
Ministerial Intern
We may walk together but our paths will never
be the same. So much of who we are is based
in what we do and where do we go. This week
when the Supreme Court upheld Prop 8 a path
was again closed off to many.
What does our faith say to us in times like
these? Now is a time to come together.
Bring someone new to join us this Sunday for
worship as we explore our paths as
individuals, a church, and a state.
Intern Peter Olandt will be preaching his
last sermon, and Senior Minister Rev. Greg
Stewart will share a reflection on
Marriage Equality. This Sunday's ministry of
music will include classical guitarist Chris
Waltz, Bill Klingelhoffer, Bill Ganz,
and Reiko Lane.
A Time for Planning and Thanks
Religious Education Retreat Saturday -- Volunteer Fete Sunday
from Betty Skwarek
Acting Director of Religious Education
On Saturday, members are gathering at the
Religious Education Planning retreat. We
will decide together what to do during the
coming year for children, youth, and adults.
The Retreat is from 9 to 3 at Home Away from
Homelessness at Fort Mason. You're invited
to call Betty at 776-4580 by Friday noon if
you want to attend but have not yet registered.
The Religious Education team will lead the
Congregation in honoring the religious
education volunteers Sunday. They and their
families have been invited to a 10 am tribute
brunch. They will also be praised during the
service in the Sanctuary.
Legacy of Torture
Forum Sunday at 9:30 in the Martin Luther King Room
from Karen Melander-Magoon
Richard Brown will speak on the SF8 Black
Panthers fight for human rights.
Eight former Black community activists --
Black Panthers and others -- were arrested
January 23, 2007 in California, New York, and
Florida on charges related to the 1971
killing of a San Francisco police officer.
Similar charges were thrown out after it was
revealed that police used torture to extract
confessions when some of these same men were
arrested in New Orleans in 1973.
'It's in order to get the people of the
United States to understand what's truly
going on and until we paint a clear picture
of what happened and what is happening now
political prisoners don't have a chance of
coming home," Brown said in a
2007 interview in Revolution,
the voice of the Revolutionary Community
Party in the USA. "We not only want them to
come home, we want people who are guilty of
these crimes against them and against all of
us to be held accountable."
The free program will start at 9:45. Come at
9:30 for conversation, coffee, and (for a
slight charge) a light breakfast.
Learn about the Hulking Hospital
Informational Meeting Sunday at 12:30 in the Martin Luther King Room

Proposed
California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC)
building
from George Mayer
CPMC is progressing through the approval
process for its humongous new hospital across
the intersection from our Sanctuary.
The Society's CPMC Task Force invites
members and friends to an
Informational Meeting on Sunday after the
service in the Martin Luther King Room. The
discussion will be hosted by David
Jones and Ben Bear.
An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) scoping
meeting will be scheduled this summer,
perhaps as early as June 9, by the San
Francisco Planning Department. We will
forward information when it is announced.
CPMC's Institutional Master Plan analysis
will be presented to the San Francisco Health
Commission on June 16 at 2:00 pm at 101 Grove
Street, third floor. Public comments will
again be accepted. A copy of their Master
Plan is available for you to read in our library.
Please make every effort to attend Sunday's
meeting. We are now at critical juncture -
it's time for everyone to be informed and
engaged.

Annual Retreat Deadline Nears
Last Days to Sign-Up for a Weekend of Fun and Community
from Kate Kuckro
The Society's Annual Retreat is just two
weeks away. It's from Friday, June 12 to
Sunday June 14 at YMCA Camp Loma Mar. Join
other members of the church community at this
beautiful retreat located just 90 minutes
south of the city.
Many members will be offering workshops on a
wide range of skills and favorite topics. For
example, Uvonne Most will be leading
her popular Gourd Art Workshop again. If
you're planning on joining that workshop,
stop by the registration table after service
to find out more, to choose a gourd, and to
pick up a materials kit with instructions
from her before the Retreat.
There will also be plenty of games and
activities for kids of all ages, the annual
talent show, a campfire sing-along, and an
outdoor worship service, to name just a few
of the planned activities. Don't miss out on
this chance to get out of the city, make new
friends, enjoy all that the camp has to
offer, and try out the workshops and activities!
To register for the retreat and/or to
volunteer to help, please see Lee Most
at the Retreat table after the Sunday
Service. You can also contact
him by email or by phone at 706-6138, and
you can register
online. The registration deadline is
Monday, June 8.
After Tuesday: What's Next?
Meet in the Middle 1 pm Saturday (May 30) at Fresno City Hall
from The Reverend Gregory Stewart
In light of the state Supreme Court's
decision to uphold the discriminatory
Proposition 8, Unitarian Universalists will
join thousands of other disaffected and
dissatisfied Californians in protest of this
blatant disregard of civil rights.
Called "Meet In The Middle," this rally takes
place on the steps of Fresno's city hall,
Saturday (May 30) at 1 pm., where you'll hear
from state and national leaders on the next
steps we need to take for marriage equality.
Our own Unitarian
Universalist Legislative Ministry is
among the event's sponsors.
Carpools for Society members and friends are
now being formed. If you need a ride or can
give a ride, please contact Executive
Director Nancy Evans at the church
office, 776-4580, or by email.
You can make a difference.

Come to the Audubon Ranch
Meet Saturday (May 30) at 9:30 am at the Church
from Dolores Priem
Unitarian Universalists for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals (UUFETA ) invites you to
join them on a trip to the Audubon Canyon
Ranch in Marin County. Meet up at the
Ranch at 11:00 am or at the church at 9:30 am.
Contact: doloresmp@aol.com
or josekel2@comcast.net
and let them know if you need a ride or
will meet us at the Ranch.
The group will hike for 1/2 mile to the
observation point to see the white egrets and
the herons in their nesting
area, and observe other birds and wildlife.
Bird watchers anticipate that the chicks will
be hatching at this time of year.
Bring water, a light lunch and socialize
after the hike. Note that rain cancels.
Saying "No" to Styrofoam
from Sonnie Willis
Hats off to the members of one Small Group
Ministry who took the initiative on Sunday to
set out and clean up the ceramic coffee jugs.
Their action was in protest of the use of
Styrofoam cups.
The Open House Postcards are in the Mail
Invite Friends, Neighbors, and Family to June 6th Event
from
Nancy Evans, Executive Director
Every Member and Friend of the Society just
received a letter containing 3 postcards.
Please use these to invite friends,
co-workers and neighbors to tour our facility
next Saturday, June 6. They will have a great
time, and there is no better way to share the
message than by direct referral.
Through your personal effort, we can invite a
thousand visitors, and that "outreach" will
keep our Center busy and our Sanctuary full.
If you need more postcards, or didn't receive
one, please contact Nancy Evans.
Join the Safety and Support Brigade
Sunday After the Service in the Fireside Room
from Riley McLaughlin
Safety and Support (SAS) invites prospective
volunteers to come to the Fireside Room and
share pizza and conversation about the role
performed by our SAS team.
The group is accepting a few more kind, calm,
and sensible folks to take turns on Sundays
observing and assisting visitors who may need
special attention. Our volunteers' commitment
to one morning a month allows us to be both
safe and inclusive on Sunday mornings.
Come and learn more, or contact Riley
McLaughlin, Melissa Fafarman, or
Dolores Priem.
We Pray, March, Stand, Sit, and Disobey
Our Public Witness in Reaction to the Supreme Court Ruling on Prop 8
Members and friends of the Society spent much
of Monday night and Tuesday witnessing in
public for the right of all loving couples to
be treated equally under the law.
Rev. Greg Stewart, Rev. Denis
Paul, Amy Kelly, Emily
Drennen, Eric Langhirt, and
Lindasusan Ulrich were among those who
felt called to disrupt traffic in protest of
the Court's
decision and made themselves subject to arrest.
Many other members of the community attended
the demonstrations under the Society's banner.
The flood of words and images spread in other
traditional and social networking media.
Here are some samples from the Day of Decision.
