Maintenance Week at
First Church
The church office and
building will be closed from Monday (August
24) through Friday (August 28) for annual
cleaning and repairs. Staff will check the
phone periodically for messages, and will
return emergency calls.
Ramadan Revisited
Sunday at 11 in the Church Sanctuary
service conducted by The Rev. Gregory Stewart
I have always been attracted to religions
that require something of it members in
response to the question, "How should we then
live?"
Islam's call to prayer and fasting during
the month of Ramadan mirrors my own spiritual
practice, even though my spiritual sources
differ those of most Muslims. I have found
that there is much common ground between
Islam and Unitarian Universalism, in part
because Monotheism (One God) figures
prominently in both, historically and
theologically. Is there room for yet another
group of hyphenated-UUs among us? Certainly,
and I'm eager to tell you why.
Joining me on the Chancel will be Community
Minister Rev. Alyson Jacks, Acting
Director of Religious Education Betty
Skwarek, and Worship Associate Claire
Bohman.
The ministry of music will be provided by flutist
Gail Edwards and pianist Juin Chyi Yew.
This is a good Sunday to invite your
interfaith friends--and others--to worship
with you this Sunday.

Arts Program Kisses Summer Good-bye
Meet Up at the Church Sunday at 10 am
from Betty Skwarek
Acting Director of Religious Education
This week's summer artists are planning to
take the banner enclosure to Civic Center,
dance it for a while, hand out kisses and
cards, engaging with people as much as
possible, and mark up the path back to church
using sidewalk chalk.
Come, have some fun, and celebrate the end of
the summer program. Summer Arts begins at 10
and continues until 12:15. New participants
are invited to join in, and children are
welcome so long as they are accompanied by an
adult (either their parent or someone with
written permission from the parent).
Sunday is the last day for this year's Summer
Arts which is a joint project of Society's
Religious Education team, ArtSeed, and the
Faithful Fools.
Children who do not come with the artists are
invited to join their families in the 11 am
Sanctuary service. Childcare for children 5
and younger will be offered in the Childcare
Center in Classroom A.
Violets for Thomas Starr King
Saturday at the Church from 9:30 to 1 pm
from David A. Jones
You are invited to dig in and help the
Buildings and Grounds community landscape
the Starr King corner of the church on
Saturday morning (August 22).
Under the coordination of new member and
landscape pro Jennie Summers-Shea,
help dig out older plants, dig in soil
additives, transplant, and put in new plants.
Bring work gloves, water, and garden tools if
you have them.
Additionally, if you have violets of any
color to donate (the plants, with roots!),
please bring them with you on Saturday. In 1864
Jessie Fremont, wife of General Fremont,
placed violets in the coffin of Thomas Starr
King, and we will be updating this memorial
with a planting of violets around King's
sarcophagus.
The outdoor work parties are a stress-free
and satisfying way to meet people while
helping the church gardens and grounds stay
appealing and welcoming.
Electrons Realigned
Last week's article on Jeremy Nickel's
quest for a $10k grant for a marriage
equality grant inadvertently omitted a
visible link to grantor's website where
people can register and vote for Jeremy's
work. To support Jeremy, visit
his page on Nau.
