About UUs for Peace-San Francisco
The purpose of UUs for Peace-SF is to further the principles of world peace, human rights and justice.
UUs for Peace (UUFP) was organized in April 2002 in response to our administration's increased militarization and specifically at that time, the massacres by Israeli military forces funded by the U.S. of Palestinian civilians in Jenin. Later that year, UUFP officially became a Social Justice Committee and have been very active in local and national efforts calling for our administration to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; to reduce military spending in favor of human economic needs; and to work through diplomatic rather than aggressive military actions to achieve peace.
Leaders of this committee initiated and promoted the important February 2002 Congregational Meeting which voted overwhelmingly to oppose the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Since then, UUFP has been involved with educational events and demonstrations advocating on behalf of peace and justice issues and human rights.
Over the past seven years, UUs for Peace-SF has joined in Bay Area peace and antiwar coalition efforts in a variety of citizen actions focused on ending the wars in the Middle East by joining in vigils, marches, educational events and civil disobedience—always taking a pledge of nonviolence—and has supported and participated in dialogues with local and national governmental representatives.
Senior Minister Gregory Stewart has instituted the reading of the names of the dead in ongoing wars monthly at Sunday Services and actively participates in peace events initiated by UUFP.
