Board Moderator Report
If you weren’t able to attend the November 8 town hall meeting, where we have posted the slide deck here. Finance was the focus of the meeting with TreasurerMarc Theobald presenting the good news about recent bequests and pledge income.
A major subject at the meeting was the need for building improvements. Perpetually tight budgets have resulted in a lot of deferred maintenance. The Board is considering the feasibility of a capital campaign, and the first step is to assess capital needs. Recently we’ve confronted three important and urgent needs: replacing the roof; renovating our nearly 50-year old organ; and installing high speed Internet. We will borrow from ourselves to finance these urgent needs, with the intention of repaying the loans with interest, likely from a capital campaign. As discussed at the town hall, a building improvements task force has compiled a tentative list of capital needs involving the Sanctuary and Center. However, we want to hear from the congregation about what building needs you see. Please put written suggestions in Vice Moderator Gayle Reynolds’ box at church. Be sure to include your contact information.
At the November Board meeting, the Board and Rev. Buehrens looked at strategic planning, and arrived at an understanding that the Society’s longer-term planning would only be possible after deciding whether to have a capital campaign and assessing its effectiveness. The Board also approved appointing Bob Burchfield to a vacancy in the Nominating Committee and changing the name of the Family Faith Committee to the Family Ministry Committee. The Board received a report on the plans of St. Mark’s Church to build a high rise with 100% affordable housing. At the request of the Green Committee, we passed resolutions in support of Climate Justice Month next Spring. More information on specific events will be forthcoming as Climate Justice Month approaches.
The Board and Rev. Buehrens entered a convent (yes, really!) in November for a Board retreat. We got to know each other better and took the first steps at owning Board governance policies we inherited from the previous Board. Especially important is being clear about the authority the Board has delegated to the Executive Team.
