Humanists & Non-Theists
Chair: Jim Barnett
We wish to encourage expression and knowledge of one of the UU traditional sources of wisdom, Humanism, within our church. We will also sponsor activities that raise the congregation’s awareness of widespread prejudice in society at large against “non-believers”.
Our activities are attended by members and friends of the Society who identify as Humanists and/or Non Theists or those who want to find out more about our naturalistic view of the world or are interested in the topics we discuss. The larger community, not associated with the First Unitarian Universalist Society, is also invited to attend. Everyone is welcome.
We welcome your suggestions regarding future events; presentations, discussion topics, music, poetry, etc. We need volunteers to organize these events and to take on tasks to help us advertise and implement our programs.
Almost every Sunday we have an event at 12:30. Most of these events are moderated discussions following viewing a video, such as Ted Talk, or a presentation by one of our members or an invited speaker. Sandwiches are typically available for purchase.
On the 4th Sunday of the month, we have a potluck at 6:00 PM followed by a program emphasizing art, music, or poetry. We also often have fun events such as game nights or members sharing their travel experiences, hobbies or other interests.
In addition to these events, we have a Darwin Day luncheon and scientific lecture in February of each year.
