Our Purpose - Society for Community Work (SCW) was founded in 1873 to be a service to individuals, to the First Unitarian Univeralist Church of SF and to the community. SCW is a benevolent organization welcoming membership of all ages and backgrounds.
Our Work - Grant Giving – SCW’s Sponsorship Program awards small grants to local non-profit organizations doing innovative work that reflects Unitarian Universalist values. Scholarship - SCW awards scholarships to undergraduate college students (new and continuing) based on financial need, academic achievement, and we particularly encourage applicants who would be the first generation in their immediate family to be attending a U.S. college or university.
Our Fun - Join us for lunch – Greet old friends! Meet new friends! The third Tuesday of each month, September to June, SCW members and friends come together for a catered lunch, fellowship and to enjoy speakers presenting entertaining and informative programs on current events, politics, arts and science and other topics of community interest.
What is SCW?
The Society for Community Work was founded in 1873 to help alleviate hardship caused by a severe economic depression in California. The original endowment from Captain William and Alice Hinckley has grown through the years as the investments have been managed by SCW members, and gifts have added to the endowment.
