It appears that 2021 is not going to be free of suffering, upheaval and deep uncertainty. Yesterday’s events may not have been a surprise, but they were frightening and deeply disappointing. Some of the images and events cut to the core of our sense of security and sacred national inheritance.
We know many of you were sick at heart- and that others also experienced signs of trauma in your bodies. We can only imagine how much more acute that must be for those of you who have experienced political upheaval, any of you who have been subject to the dangers of existential fear and fundamental lack of safety. For our people of color in the congregation and our members and friends from marginalized communities, many events yesterday were a horrifying repetition of the trauma of the worst of life for you in these United States.
In these moments, our instincts are often to fight, to flee, or to freeze. Yet we know that where the healing must personally begin is in care for ourselves and one another. In the midst of so much divisiveness, pain, and uncertainty, sometimes the best place to begin and reground is simply in one another’s company. With that simple invitation and the hopes of healing and comfort, the ministers and worship associates will host, tonight, a gathering for worship and to be together. Please join. The details are below. And should you need to speak to someone individually in this time, please reach out to Joe Chapot (JChapot@uusf.org) and he will help you schedule time with one of our ministers in the day and days ahead.
In faith and love,
Vanessa, Alyson, & Meg
